Pumkin Patterson is a thirteen-year-old girl living in a small two-room house in Kingston, Jamaica. She lives with her grandmother, Aunt Sophie, and her rarely-present mother, Paulette.

When Aunt Sophie gets a job offer in France, she promises to bring Pumkin in a year. To do so, Pumkin must pass her French entrance exam. However, when her grandmother dies, Pumkin is left with her unstable mother. Soon, her lazy and dishonest father reappears, making things worse.

Pumkin must raise money for her French exam to escape her home and reunite with her aunt. She uses her love for baking to start a small business, making sweet potato pudding, coconut drops, and chocolate cakes. As her business grows, her school and mother discover it, and Pumkin’s dreams may be at risk.
